• Encourage an understanding of why challenging balance and strengthening  muscles relates to both preventing falls and improving function.
  • Examples are provided that can be used when introducing the different LiFE activities. The aim is to link what might be relevant for the person with what the activity offers.
  • Its not a ‘lecture’ just use as a teachable moment when opportunity arises
  • For example,
Bend your knees activity:  Strong quadriceps muscles improve knee stability and our ability to climb chairs or get up from a chair.
Walk sideways activity: The hip abductors are important as they stabilize the hip on our support leg when walking. Weak hip abductors are sometimes the cause of falls. We don’t often step sideways so LiFE increases the opportunities and strengthens these muscles.
