LiFE is different to a traditional structured exercise program, which is performed at set times each week following specific exercises. LiFE is about how to change habits and addressing the underpinning motivation for behaviour change.

If we can influence someone’s beliefs about how an activity will benefit them, give them the right skills on how to do it, and set up systems for changing habits, there is a better chance the activity will become embedded into daily activities. Positive consequences such as improved function, better balance and more confidence further lead to stronger beliefs, enhanced skills and maintenance.

The figure below provides a framework for LiFE, summarising the main concepts underpinning how to embed balance and strength activities into daily life. This includes features that enhance beliefs, attitudes and understanding of the program, strategies to enable habitual change, and the positive functional outcomes that sustain engagement in the program. These include fall prevention, increased function and greater participation in activities and life roles. This framework and its importance are discussed in this module.

In short, habit change theory is an essential element in maintaining behaviour change.
