Functional exercise – exercise with purpose to enhance certain movement/ closely aligned with daily tasks. Specific exercises are performed to train/improve a specific outcome. For example, performing step ups to improve mobility and stair climbing or squats to improve sit to stand ability

Functional-integrated exercise – is a specific type of functional exercise- where training is embedded within everyday tasks and routines. For example, challenging your  balance whilst cleaning your teeth or strengthening you legs when bending to  get clothes from a drawer

Benefit of functional-integrated exercises

  • Exercises are manageable, relevant and simple
  • Better adherence, higher effect in challenging balance and balance confidence;
  • Some evidence for behavioural change such as automaticity and action planning
