Same exercises as other structured fall prevention programs – but a different approach to doing them
Harry – a participant in the first LiFE pilot
“As I walked through the house I would hold onto the walls and doorways. I would reach for tables or chairs as I went past them. Once I started practicing the balance activities – I realized that I didn’t need to reach for them. If I concentrated more on my walking and less on looking for something to grab, I actually walked better.”
Harry was very surprised to find his balance was so poor, but realised he could work at it. Which he did. This is the hall in which he routinely did his LiFE tandem walk. Eventually he was able to do it without holding on. He made great gains in his balance and confidence and did not fall again during our follow up.
