Falls Prevention for Health Professionals

Prevent falls in the home and community

One in three people aged 65+ years fall every year and many older people are concerned about falling. These people are also very highly motivated to stay active, mobile and live independently. Learning how to help your clients prevent falls and reduce the risk of injury is of great value.

Allied health professionals can prevent falls by:

  • Identifying environmental hazards in the home and community
  • Recognising behavioral risks related to falls
  • Problem-solving solutions jointly with patients
  • Developing a tailored Action Plan to reduce falls

The falls prevention online workshop is a valuable activity of Continuing Professional Development (CDP & PDU) for occupational therapists (OTs), physiotherapists and exercise physiologists. A series of case studies demonstrate how to approach people with different fall risk factors and profiles, then create a tailored Action Plan. Allied health professionals are taught to apply evidence-based falls prevention measures into their everyday practice.
