Falls prevention in general practice

Assessing and discussing falls is an important part of general practice. Family physicians and practice nurses can do a lot to help patients reduce their fall risks.

General medical practitioners can help to prevent or reduce falls by:

  • Talking to patients about falls
  • Managing medications
  • Recommending specific strength & balance exercises
  • Initiating a home safety review to reduce slip & trip hazards
  • Initiating referral to other fall prevention interventions

The evidence-based learning activities on this site are designed to make it easy for doctors and practice nurses to help reduce falls amongst their patients. Options include the Active Learning Module and Clinical Audit Activity.
