A tandem stand is best performed where the participant has access to stable support. This could include (but is not limited to) kitchen or bathroom benches, dining tables or stable chairs. You should perform a tandem stand by having the toes of one foot in line with the heel of the other foot.

You should show the participant how to perform the activity starting with hand support. Then show them how to decrease hand support by removing one hand, then by using only finger tips for support, then removing all hand support. An easy upgrade for tandem stand is to shift weight backwards and forwards, and this can also be done while performing a daily task such as washing up.

Balance Principle: Decreased base of support
Balance Activity: Tandem stand
