• the LiFE planner supports repetition

  • The formation of any new habit requires practice – performing the activity repetitively in the same context to strengthen the association. So self-monitoring and reinforcing is long known to be important

The Activity Planner is also a useful reinforcing tool we used it to tick off which days you do each LiFE activity in the planner. Changing habits doesn’t ‘just happen’.

  • In LiFE we teach to  Go slow, don’t upgrade until it is mastered in the planned context, don’t give too many things to do at once. Need to allow that repetition in the same context to strengthen the cue-action association. So they get the LiFE ‘philosophy.’

  • The therapist needs to ensure that participants are practicing the habit correctly and safely.
  • They also have a significant role (especially in the early stages) of reinforcing  the repetition of the behaviour until the participant begins to see or feel improvements and then these become reinforcers.
  • Participants can monitor their own performance while they are implementing LiFE. They tick off in the planner if they day it each day and can also ‘count’ how many for a newly introduced activity to help reinforce
  • Encourage autonomy in planning upgrades as they learn how to continuously challenge themselves Their engagement in the planner and ‘getting the program’ impacts outcomes.
